Pune: Till Thursday morning,Prachi Poman, the Baramati girl was confident of scoring about 96 per cent in the secondary school certificate examinations. At 11 am,when she logged on to the Maharashtra state board for secondary and higher secondary educations official website to check her result, she was stumped.
I could hardly believe what I was seeing. My marksheet showed 99.82 per cent.I rubbed my eyes, asked my mother to pinch me and I wondered if I was dreaming.Soon,I had the printout of my marksheet and then friends and relatives around me erupted in joy, Prachi told TOI.
Her 549 out of 550 is based on the best of 5 total. She is not the only student in the state to reach that mark.Several others have managed to score above 99 per cent,a first for state board students.
She is in the big league with the likes of Kalyan girl Rucha Patil who has scored 100 per cent marks. Her total of 550 marks included 25 bonus marks for excelling in sports.Others included Ankita Mitkari from Kolhapur who scored 99.27 per cent,Prakash Yadav of Solapur who scored 99.09 per cent and Kolhapurs Snehal Kumbhar who got 99.27 per cent.
In 2009,Umarga girl,Shilpa Hiremath had topped the state with 98.61 per cent while in 2008,Gaurav Kulkarni from Satara scored 97.84 to take the honours, while Maithili Rajendra Bhaskar scored 96.15 to top the state in 2007.
The high-scoring trend among students has taken educationists by surprise.
Expert Suman Karandikar said,I am shocked to know that students can get 99 marks with some scoring even more.It is definitely a topic for research as it is not one,but several students achieving the near impossible.
Former chairman of the state board Vasant Kalpande attributed it to the best of 5 scheme adopted by the state government based on which percentages are calculated this year.
This can easily happen when only five subjects are considered for the final score.Hence, there is no need to rejoice. If the students have even scored 95 marks out 100 in the sixth subject,it hold no meaning.Naturally, the percentage will be high.Hence, the grading system is the next step after scrapping of the merit and the toppers list.
Former state director of education Dilip Gogate said,This is a positive sign, the trend is due to the changed examination pattern which includes objective questions.
About 15 years ago,a percentage of 85 and above was considered brilliant, times have changed.
